The Stanley Cup final is currently ongoing between the Florida Panthers and the Edmonton Oilers, while the rest of the NHL teams have already shifted their focus to the offseason. The Colorado Avalanche have kicked off their offseason moves by signing veteran forward Brock Nelson to a three-year contract extension worth $7.5 million annually. Nelson was acquired by the Avalanche at the trade deadline last season in exchange for forward Calm Richie, defenseman Oliver Kylington, and conditional draft picks for 2026 and 2028.

NHL Free Agency officially begins on July 1 at noon ET, but many teams are already actively trying to strengthen their rosters through early signings and trades. Among the big names expected to be key figures in the free agency market are Toronto Maple Leafs star Mitch Marner, as well as players like Sam Bennett, Vancouver Canucks winger Brock Boeser, Panthers defender Aaron Ekblad, and Stars center Matt Duchene, highlighting the depth of this year’s free agent pool.

The Avalanche’s contract extension of Brock Nelson shows their intent to lock down key players for their near future. Nelson, who would have become an unrestricted free agent this summer, contributed 13 points after being traded from the New York Islanders, finishing the season with 56 points combined from both teams. He played a significant role on the Avalanche’s second line alongside Gabriel Landeskog and Valeri Nichushkin, and will continue to do so as he approaches his 34th birthday in the upcoming season.

Fan Take: This contract extension signifies the Avalanche’s commitment to maintaining a strong core as they pursue another Stanley Cup run, which is exciting for hockey fans who follow team dynasties. Moreover, the active offseason moves signal a competitive and dynamic NHL landscape, promising thrilling developments leading into the next season.
