Flyers Eye Top NHL Draft Prospects with Sam Bennett as Key Comparison

Many Philadelphia Flyers supporters are eager to sign tough, hard-nosed players like Florida Panthers’ standout Sam Bennett. However, an alternative strategy could involve drafting a younger talent instead. Bennett, who led the NHL playoffs in goals, could command up to $10 million annually in free agency, according to various reports. Yet, despite the Flyers rebuilding and having cap space, investing heavily in Bennett at 29 years old may not be the smartest move, especially since he has never scored 30 goals in a regular season and has a career-high of only 51 points.

Looking ahead to the 2025 NHL Draft, the Flyers might find a similar player who is younger, more affordable, and has great potential. At the NHL Scouting Combine, top prospect Brady Martin shared that he had dinner with the Flyers and compared himself to a mix of Sam Bennett and Tom Wilson. The 18-year-old from Elmira, Ontario, finished his season strong with 33 goals, 39 assists, and 72 points in 57 games, plus valuable playoff experience and international success at the 2025 IIHF U18 World Championships.

Martin, who stands 6 feet tall and known for his physicality and intangibles, could be available when the Flyers pick sixth overall in the draft. Ranked between 6th and 28th by different scouting sources, he may not be the flashiest player but fits the gritty style new Flyers coach Rick Tocchet appreciates, similar to former Canucks player J.T. Miller. This kind of player could prove pivotal in the Flyers’ future.

Fan Take: This news is a significant sign that the Flyers might prioritize building a younger, tougher team through the draft rather than chasing expensive free agents. It’s an exciting approach that could bring new energy and identity to the team, making future games more intense and thrilling for hockey fans.
