On June 15th, NASCAR is set to make history by hosting, for the first time in the modern era, a points race outside the United States at Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez in Mexico City. Recently, NASCAR Commissioner Steve Phelps visited Brazil during the NASCAR Brazil Round at Interlagos. During the Coca-Cola 600 race weekend, Motorsport.com met with Commissioner Phelps and NASCAR Chief Executive and Vice President Chad Seigler, who shared insights on Phelps’ Brazil visit and the potential for Brazil to host a NASCAR Cup Series race, similar to this year’s event in Mexico.

When asked about racing prospects in Brazil, Phelps expressed enthusiasm but noted there is no set date for such an event. While talks about bringing NASCAR to Brazil have stalled, the Cup Series race will continue at Bowman Gray Stadium through 2026. Phelps looks forward to the upcoming Mexican race, highlighting the excitement and support from Mexican fans.

Regarding Brazilian drivers in the Cup Series, NASCAR currently benefits from international talent like Mexican driver Daniel Suarez and Australian Shane Van Gisbergen, and there is strong interest in bringing Brazilian drivers from NASCAR Brazil to compete full-time in the U.S. racing scene. Chad Seigler praised the success and growing popularity of NASCAR Brazil, citing fan enthusiasm at Interlagos and Brazilian driver Gabriel Casagrande’s impressive performance on a U.S. oval track in New Smyrna.

Former Formula 1 driver Nelson Piquet Jr. remains the only Brazilian to have won at three national NASCAR levels, while Indy 500 winner Helio Castroneves made his Cup debut this year, though his first race ended early due to a crash. The presence of Brazilian talent in top-tier NASCAR competitions continues to grow, reflecting the sport’s expanding international appeal.

Fan Take: This milestone event solidifies NASCAR’s commitment to expanding its global reach, offering fresh opportunities for fans and drivers alike. Bringing races and talent from countries like Mexico and Brazil into the spotlight not only diversifies the sport but also invigorates its fanbase with new energy and cultural enthusiasm.
