Mets’ Clay Holmes Dominates on the Mound: “I Delivered When It Mattered”

Mets Manager Carlos Mendoza likely prefers starting pitcher Clay Holmes to consistently utilize his strengths, and Holmes has shown he can be dominant, especially when facing runners in scoring positions. Holmes was exceptional at shutting down opponents in such situations, keeping the Rockies scoreless over six innings by holding them to eight hits and walking none.

In 2019, Holmes was particularly effective under pressure, allowing just six hits in 50 opportunities (.120 average) and lowering his ERA to 2.95 through 73.1 innings with the Mets. After allowing nine hits at Coors Field, Holmes emphasized the importance of avoiding free passes and getting the right contact or swings, which helped him maintain control despite the hitter-friendly park.

Early in the game, the Rockies loaded the bases twice but Holmes escaped unscathed with strikeouts and a crucial double play, enabling the Mets to take and hold the lead by the fifth inning. Mendoza praised Holmes’ reliance on ground balls and his ability to mix pitches like the sinker, slider, and sweeper effectively, calling his performance outstanding.

Holmes notably used his changeup sparingly, favoring sliders before the game since the pitch felt better in the bullpen. He explained how altitude affects pitch movement and how he strategically leaned on his sliders and sweepers to keep hitters off balance.

That night, Holmes achieved six swings and misses, mostly with sliders and sweepers, and maintained control with 10 called strikes on his sinkers. He emphasized the importance of staying within his limits and not overexerting himself to give himself the best chance to succeed.

There were doubts about whether Holmes could pitch deep into the game, especially after tough innings in high-altitude Denver, but Mendoza sent him back out for the sixth inning with the Mets leading 4-1. Holmes acknowledged the physical challenge but managed to finish six strong innings, providing reliable work for the team.

Speaking about his season so far, Holmes feels comfortable in his role, pitching deep into games and getting stronger by leaning on trainers and nutritionists for support. He believes his approach is paying off as he settles into a consistent and effective routine.

Fan Take: Clay Holmes’ ability to excel under pressure and adapt his pitching strategy is a promising sign for the Mets’ pitching staff and offers fans hope for strong, reliable performances in crucial moments. His success in challenging environments like Coors Field demonstrates the importance of skillful pitching in sustaining competitive baseball.
