Panthers Players Embrace Two-Day Game Breaks Following Stellar Stanley Cup Final Kickoff

The fast pace of the first two games in the Stanley Cup final has made the series incredibly exciting to watch. Both the Florida Panthers and Edmonton Oilers claimed hard-fought wins in Alberta, but now the action shifts to Sunrise, Florida, following some intense fights in South Florida. Although 16 total goals have been scored—equally divided between the two teams—the defensive efforts on both sides remain strong. The matches have been physical and consistent, with both teams delivering intense, high-level play.

So far, these two teams have provided hockey fans with two thrilling Stanley Cup final games, which is impressive considering last year’s seven-game epic between Florida and Edmonton was already regarded as one of the best in history. Following these demanding games, both teams are taking a much-needed extra day off as the series relocates from central Alberta to southern Florida.

Panthers head coach Paul Maurice expressed his relief, noting that the break is essential for recovery. The travel distance between Sunrise and Edmonton, known from last year as the largest gap between Stanley Cup final opponents, means the rest is crucial. Panthers defender Aaron Ekblad emphasized the importance of the break given the six-hour flight and two-hour time difference.

The Panthers arrived in Florida on Saturday, roughly 12 hours after their thrilling 5-4 double-overtime victory in Game 2 at Rogers Place. Most of the team took part in an optional practice on Sunday at the Baptist Health Iceplex in Fort Lauderdale. Forward Sam Reinhart highlighted the importance of recovery and preparation for the upcoming games, regardless of the previous outcome.

Among those on the ice Sunday was injured forward AJ Greer, who was wearing a light blue practice jersey indicating his recent injury, alongside teammates Nico Sturm and Mackie Samoskevich. This suggests the Panthers’ roster remains unchanged since their Game 2 win, though changes could occur within the next 24 hours. It will be interesting to see if Greer suits up when Florida holds a morning skate on Monday in preparation for Game 3 at Amerant Bank Arena.

Stay tuned for updates.

Fan Take: This intense and hard-fought Stanley Cup final series is a testament to the resilience and skill of both teams, keeping fans on the edge of their seats. The physicality and high stakes reflect the sport’s growing excitement, promising a memorable conclusion for hockey enthusiasts worldwide.
