The 2025 NHL Draft is fast approaching, and the New York Rangers face a decision on whether to keep their 12th overall pick in the first round. Due to the JT Miller trade, the Rangers must forfeit either their 2025 or 2026 first-round pick.

In the latest NHL mock draft by The Athletic, reporter Scott Wheeler has the Rangers selecting defenseman Jackson Smith. Standing 6-foot-3, Smith has had a standout season with the Tri City Americans of the Western Hockey League, tallying 11 goals, 43 assists, and 54 points across 68 games. The 18-year-old ranks 9th in the NHL Central Scouting mid-term rankings for North American skaters eligible for the 2025 draft.

Wheeler describes Smith as a large, left-handed defenseman with a powerful skating stride who can impact the game in multiple ways. He excels at skating through pressure and maintaining control laterally. Beyond his solid defensive skills, Smith is noted for his blazing speed, which aids his offensive contributions. Jason Bukara from Sportsnet praises Smith’s agility and ability to break out of pressure, as well as his skill in maneuvering along the offensive blue line to create scoring chances.

The draft event will be held in Los Angeles, California, from June 27-28.

Fan Take: This draft news is crucial for hockey fans because it highlights the Rangers’ strategic choices in rebuilding their roster through high-potential young talent like Jackson Smith. If Smith lives up to his promise, he could become a key player who helps elevate the sport’s pace and excitement with his dynamic playstyle.
