Tyrese Haliburton Falls Short in Game 2 of NBA Finals as Pacers Take on Thunder: “Feels Like Five Defenders on Me”

In Oklahoma City, Tyrese Halliburton’s entrance at the Paycom Center was notably subdued, contrasting sharply with his usual confident demeanor. This might have been a strategic move to lower the Oklahoma City Thunder’s guard, especially after Indiana’s 123-107 win in Game 2, pushing the 2025 NBA Finals to Indianapolis.

Despite his own admission of struggling in the first halves of the Finals’ initial games, Halliburton made a strong impact late in the game with a winning jumper. Nevertheless, Sunday’s game saw Halliburton stifled by the Thunder’s defense, limiting his early scoring to just three points in the first half and controlling the game to tie the series.

Oklahoma City deployed a physical defensive strategy, keeping Halliburton away from the paint and forcing him to shoot from the perimeter, where their defense was more effective. Halliburton acknowledged the challenge, noting the Thunder’s aggressive defense and ball protection.

Halliburton ended with 17 points and six assists, an improvement over Game 1 but mostly accumulated in the fourth quarter when the Pacers’ comeback efforts fell short. The Thunder’s defense, exemplified by players like Lu Dort, Jalen Williams, and Alex Caruso, effectively disrupted Indiana’s offensive flow, especially making it hard for Pascal Siakam to generate scoring opportunities.

Throughout the playoffs, Halliburton’s performance has fluctuated, demonstrating the difficulty of consistently excelling under pressure. Despite this, Coach Rick Carlisle emphasized the team’s need for collective effort beyond just individual scoring, highlighting the importance of teamwork in the Finals.

The Pacers are now tasked with improving their screens for Halliburton, as well as managing physical play without drawing fouls. Halliburton himself remained accountable for his performance, acknowledging the tough defense and the necessity for the team to create better opportunities to take quality shots in upcoming games.
