BERLIN – Third seed and defending champion Jessica Pegra fell in the final 16 of the Berlin Open on Wednesday, losing a marathon match that lasted three hours to 2021 champion Lude Mirasam Sonova 6-7 (8) 7-5 7-6 (5).

The Russian, faced with either Polish Magdalena Fleck or American Amanda Anisimova, then made good use of her thunderous first serve for most of the match, firing a total of 18 aces at the Pegra two.

Samsonova had enough opportunity to seal the first set, but wasted a total of four set points, 5-4 and 6-5, and Pegula snatched it with a tiebreaker.

The pair held the serve until Samsonova broke his opponent 5-5 in two sets, then held the serve until he held the level.

The Pegra then broke 2-2. Despite having three break opportunities of her own in the next game, she fell behind 4-2.

She digs deep to win the next three games, then carved out two match points 5-4.

However, Samsonova stuck to force another tiebreak and scored a spot in the quarter final with her own first match point.

Tunisian Ons Jabeur, who slipped into the main draw as a lucky loser, booked her spot in the quarter-finals with a 6-1, 6-3 bang for the world number five Jasmine Paolini.

He is a two-time Wimbledon finalist in 2022, and the winner in Berlin will win his first top five victory in nearly two years, and within two weeks he will see the house in Grass alongside his third Grand Slam in London.

It was also the first time since February that 61st place Javert has won consecutive matches in the main draw of a tournament.

She will face Markat Vondrousova or Russian Diana Schneider over the past eight years. Spain’s eighth seed Pola Badosa punched tickets for the quarterfinals in a 7-6 (2) 6-3 victory over America’s Emmanavaro.

Badosa managed two breaks in the first set to move up 5-2, but she quickly slipped that advantage as Navarro scored four games in a row and forced her to rally back and forth.

The Spaniards composed themselves in time to win 7-2.

Both players held serve in the second set until Badosa took a break and raised 5-3, closing the proceedings with her first match point.
