French Open 2025: Emma Navarro is crushed with shocking first round upset vs. Jessica Boosa Maneiro

Emma Navarro shot the women’s tennis rankings after a strong 2024. That pushed her all the way up to the world’s ninth place rankings, making her one of the best seed Americans to enter the 2025 French Open.

However, her stay at the event was short-lived. Navarro was crushed by Spain’s Jessica Bouza Maneiro in the first round of the event. Tennis is a chaos, but Navarro’s margin of defeat was noticeable. Bouzas Maneiro won the match 6-0, 6-1. Navarro managed to win in just one game against Bouzas Maneiro, who appeared in the event ranked 68th.

It was a great feat for Booza Maneiro. The last time a woman defeated the top 10 players in the Grand Slam 6-0, 6-0 was in 1989 when Martinana Bratirova defeated seventh place Manuela Mariva at the US Open. Maneiro was a game away from adding her name to that list.

The stats sheet doesn’t look pretty for Navarro, who committed 18 forced errors, had four double faults, transforming only one of the 36 breakpoint opportunities.

It was a disappointing performance from Navarro, who reached the fourth round at the 2024 French Open. Navarro showed growth in that event, beating high-ranking American Madison Keys in the third round. Navarro faced Alina Savalenka in the fourth round, and Navarro lost. Sabalenka was ranked second in last year’s French Open. She joined the No. 1 female tennis player in 2025.

With the loss, Navarro is hoping to reorganize and hope for a better outcome at Wimbledon in June. Bouzas Maneiro is looking to keep her momentum going in the second round, facing American Robin Montgomery on Wednesday. Bouzas Maneiro enters the match as a favorite after Montgomery confused Frenchman Diane Parry in the first round on Monday.
