Wimbledon in England – has become part of Novak Djokovic’s routine, especially in the Grand Slam tournaments. He introduces all three – if this is his final appearance or not.
It happened again at Wimbledon on Saturday, but his reaction is the same as it tends to be, and it is essentially: who can say it?
“Whether that might be my ‘last dance’,” the 24-time major champion began, and “I’m not sure. I’m not sure about Roland Garros or the other slams I’ll play next.
And Djokovic went on to offer something like trying to calm the story of whether he was really pondering his retirement at the age of 38, whether it was realistic about where things were also.
“My wish is to play for several more years. I want to be motivated both physically and mentally, in order to continue playing at the highest level,” he said. “That’s the goal. But at this stage we’ll never know.”
What Djokovic admits is that the All-England club may provide him with the most likely place for him to collect another Grand Slam single title.
“Because of the results I felt, I would probably agree that Wimbledon could be the best chance for him to play at Wimbledon,” said Djokovic, who will face Alexandre Muller on Tuesday. “It’s just a motive to mentally push that extra push and get the best tennis player to do the best tennis player.”
Djokovic has won seven championships in the grass majors and a total of eight behind the Martina Navratirova’s record-breaking women’s trophy, the number Roger Federer won, but was lost in the 2023 and 2024 Carlos Alcaraz finals.
Djokovic has appeared in title matches in each of the title matches that have held the last six tournaments (cancelled in 2020 amid the Covid-19 pandemic). He won in 2018, 2019, 2021 and 2022.
As for the enduring question about Djokovic’s future, it’s the same type of topic presented to Federer, Rafael Nadal and Serena Williams, just as the greats of the game approached a farewell.
It’s Djokovic’s turn now.
However, he brought three in 2023, just because he hasn’t won the Grand Slam trophy in over a year and a half. It concluded with the US Open that September – don’t think Djokovic can’t grab another.
He reminded anyone listening on Saturday, so he advanced to the semi-finals of the Australian Open this January, stopped after one set due to a hamstring injury, and arrived at the Final Four this month at the French Open, then lost to No. 1 Jannik Sinner. Djokovic then left the court and took the time to kiss his hand and touch the clay, saying that it might have been his last match at Roland Garos.
He also had a not-so-minded achievement, beating Alkaraz and won the Serbian gold medal at the Parisian Games a year ago.
“These tournaments give me the biggest drive,” Djokovic said. “I like the way I feel right now. In terms of tennis, I play well in practice sessions. When I start a tournament, it’s clearly completely different. I’ll have a very good tournament and try to go as much as I can.”
