Could Kadri Return to the Maple Leafs? Latest NHL Rumor Rundown: Sabres vs. Byram’s Offer Sheet Showdown

It’s been six years since the Toronto Maple Leafs traded Nazem Kadri to the Colorado Avalanche. In 2018, John Tavares was added to that trade, with Kadri earning an average annual salary of $4.5 million, eventually becoming a costly third-line center. His postseason performances often improved after he corrected undisciplined play, helping him play faster and smarter.

Later that summer, Kadri was traded to the Calgary Flames, following his role in the Avalanche’s 2022 Stanley Cup win. Over time, he grew into a more disciplined player without losing his knack for scoring critical points. Now 34 years old, Kadri is a key figure for the Flames, although he was the subject of trade rumors last summer. These rumors reached a point where Kadri urged the media to “pump the brakes,” expressing his affection for living and playing in Calgary.

A year later, trade speculation emerged again when Toronto Sun’s Terry Koshan suggested the possibility of Kadri rejoining the Maple Leafs. With Mitch Marner’s recent departure to the Vegas Golden Knights, Toronto still needs a top-six forward. Koshan wondered if Leafs GM Brad Treliving might pursue Kadri. While there is no concrete indication a deal will occur, NHL sources believe Kadri might be open to returning to Toronto. However, there is no pressure on Kadri to demand a trade or waive his no-movement clause.

It seems unlikely the Flames want to trade Kadri, as he led the team last season with 35 goals and 67 points, making him crucial to their playoff hopes this year. Even if Calgary considered trading him, they would want to receive young NHL talent in return.

Shifting to Buffalo, defenseman Rasmus Dahlin remains central to trade talks. The 24-year-old is a restricted free agent with arbitration rights and is thought to be a potential trade candidate or target for an offer sheet. Sabres GM Kevyn Adams recently stated the team would match any offer sheet for Dahlin. Buffalo News’ Mike Harrington highlighted Buffalo’s need to replace top right-winger JJ Peterka, who was traded to the Utah Mammoth last week. Harrington also clarified that Dahlin is two years away from unrestricted free agent status, rather than one as previously reported.

Fan Take: This trade speculation involving key players like Kadri and Dahlin highlights the high stakes and strategic maneuvering in the NHL. Fans should pay attention because these moves could significantly impact team dynamics and playoff outcomes, ultimately shaping the future of the sport.
