Penguins Veteran Kris Letang Sidelined for Over a Month After Fractured Foot

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Pittsburgh Penguins defenseman Kris Letang will be sidelined for at least four weeks due to a broken foot. The team revealed the injury status on Saturday ahead of their matchup against the New York Rangers. Penguins head coach Dan Muse mentioned that Letang, who is approaching his 20th NHL season, sustained the injury during the game. The injury occurred during their 6-2 victory over Chicago on Thursday.

Letang’s absence coincides with the Penguins heading into the Olympic break. Over their past eight games, Pittsburgh has achieved a strong record of 6-0-2, climbing to second place in the Metropolitan Division.

The 38-year-old player participated in 50 games this season, recording three goals and 22 assists. He is just three points shy of reaching 800 career points.

Interestingly, Letang’s injury comes at a strategic time, as the NHL is taking an extended break in anticipation of the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan-Cortina, which start next week. Since the Penguins are not participating in the Olympics, they will enjoy a rest period from February 6 to February 25.

Fan Take: This injury news is significant for hockey fans because Letang is a crucial veteran presence on the ice, and his absence could impact the Penguins’ playoff run. It also highlights how injuries can shape team dynamics during crucial stretches of the season, reminding fans of the unpredictable nature of the sport.
