Landnoris finished Friday’s practice at the UK Grand Prix in the fastest time, but Ferrari was taking on a strong challenge with Silverstone.
Norris lowered his benchmark to 1m25.816 on his first lap on soft tires. McLaren Driver claimed all three purple sectors when he completed the lap. This effort made him nearly 0.4 seconds faster than the next Best Charles Leclair, but Monegasque radioed his team about the reverse front left corner, which he told him he was spending a considerable amount of lap time.
Leclerc’s second attempt with the same set of soft tires brought him within 0.222 seconds of Norris, pinching the fastest sector in a central split along the way, but the car has a potentially significant unrealized possibility.
Lewis Hamilton also found time on his second attempt, improving from the second Ferrari pace to the third and 0.301 seconds.
Oscar Piastri was 0.47 seconds behind Norris. His best raps featured errors throughout the club and could not even set a personal best in the final sector on the final lap.
The second run on the same tire did not improve his time, but fixed an error in the third sector. But the Australians were nearly 0.25 seconds later than Norris in the central division from Brookland to Chapel. When comparing best sectors, it emphasizes what championship leaders still need to do to catch their teammates.
Max Verstappen worked hard from a fifth and 0.498 seconds pace. The Dutch once again complained of inadequate handling from the Red Bull RB21, and the understeer prevented him from laping the fastest.
“Have you seen my front tires at high speed? They just don’t respond,” he radioed to the team.
Andrea Kimi Antoneri was the fastest Mercedes despite snapping the club on his fastest lap.
Lance Stroll received the Aston Martin full upgrade package for FP2, equipping him 0.614 seconds from his seventh pace and split Antonelli from teammate George Russell, who was eighth place ad-lift of 0.707.
The Racing Bulls continue to look impressive among the midfielders, with Isack Hadjar and Liam Lawson splitting 0.1 seconds between 9th and 10th.
Alex Albon came in 11th place at Williams ahead of Aston Martin’s Fernando Alonso and Sauber’s Gabriel Boltreto.
Esteban Ocon was 14th in the fastest Haas entry ahead of Yuki Tsunoda. He resumed control of the Red Bull racing car following Alvid Lindblad’s FP1 appearance, but his rookie teammate came in first place in a previous session, wrapping 1.164 in 15th place.
Carlos Signe spun out of Lafield early in the session. This puts him at risk by wiping Hamilton in front of him as Williams slipped down the road.
The team suddenly lowered the pirouette into a gust of wind. However, the sign was summoned to a post-session steward hearing as it allegedly was driving “in a way that is potentially dangerous to other drivers.”
Nico Halkenberg reclaimed the car from Paul Aron, who had deputed for him in FP1, to set the 17th fastest time. Alpine teammates Pierre Guthrie and Franco Colapinto were more than 1.3 seconds away from the pace on the 18th and 20th, with Oliver Bareman’s second Haas on the 19th.
