Philadelphia 76ers Rookie VJ Edge Explains Why NBA Beats College After Just One Summer League Game

The Philadelphia 76ers suffered a narrow 93-89 defeat against the Utah Jazz in their opening summer league game. Despite the loss, fans are thrilled by rookie VJ Edgecombe, who stood out as the top scorer. The Jazz had a strong advantage, playing seven seasoned NBA veterans for over ten minutes, while the Sixers only gave five veterans similar time on the court. However, in summer league play, the focus is less on winning and more on showcasing rookies and fringe players battling for NBA and two-way contracts.

VJ Edgecombe, the third overall pick, impressed with a 28-point double-double and three steals. At Baylor University, Edgecombe was a standout, averaging 15 points and 5.6 rebounds, earning All-Big 12 honors, and is seen as a potential franchise player for the 76ers, outshining fellow pick Ace Bailey, who managed only 8 points. Although Edgecombe shot just 1-of-1 from three-point range and has a college three-point percentage of 34%, his ability to attack the basket is notable, benefiting from the more open NBA paint.

“It’s way better than college,” Edgecombe said after the game, highlighting the increased space and court dynamics in the NBA. On the Philadelphia roster, Edgecombe shares the court with stars like Tyrese Maxey, Jared McCain, Paul George, Kelly Oubre, and Joel Embiid, which should help him maximize his potential. Known for his athletic slash play, Edgecombe could quickly become one of the league’s most thrilling young players.

According to BETMGM, Edgecombe ranks third in odds to win Rookie of the Year (+1000), behind Cooper Flag and Tre Johnson. While Edgecombe’s role might be smaller compared to typical third overall picks, his all-around skills make him a valuable asset for the Sixers, who still have three All-Stars in their prime. His summer league debut revealed he knows how to leverage his strengths, making efficient shots mostly near the basket.

Fan Take: This news is exciting for basketball enthusiasts because VJ Edgecombe represents a fresh talent ready to impact the NBA scene with his dynamic playstyle. His rise signals a promising future not only for the Sixers but also for the evolving pace and athleticism in basketball.
