Real Madrid Dominates Al Giral in Club World Cup Opener as Jacine Baunou Makes Key Saves

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. — Xabi Alonso had only been Real Madrid’s coach for a brief period before facing his first critical challenge at the Club World Cup on Wednesday. Tasked with reinvigorating one of football’s most iconic teams, he encountered a formidable opponent in Al Hilal, resulting in a 1-1 draw in this inaugural tournament.

The Saudi club held their ground against the most decorated team in Europe, thanks to an impressive penalty save by goalkeeper Yasin Baunou during the second half.

Gonzalo García, stepping in for the absent Kylian Mbappé, scored for Madrid early on. However, just five minutes later, Raul Asensio conceded a careless penalty, which Reuben Neves converted to equalize.

In the second half, after a controversial penalty was awarded to Real Madrid, Federico Valverde’s attempt was thwarted by Baunou. At the final whistle, Madrid’s performance mirrored their struggles of recent seasons.

Alonso stepped in late last month to succeed the esteemed Carlo Ancelotti following a disappointing runner-up finish last season. His mission was not to dismantle the squad but to refine it, typically with more time for integration.

Instead, he found himself thrust into a high-stakes tournament. Despite this, Alonso expressed his "incredible excitement" about the prospect of revamping the team into a more cohesive unit during a talk on Tuesday. He aims to create a squad that collaborates effectively at all levels, a vision he attempted to implement since his first training session on June 9.

Al Hilal, under new coach Simone Inzaghi, also arrived at the Club World Cup with a lackluster performance but had significantly invested $550 million in high-profile players like João Cancelo and Kalidou Koulibaly over the past two years.

In the first half of the match, Al Hilal outperformed Madrid, securing more possession and double the shots on goal. However, Real took the lead in the 34th minute when Trent Alexander-Arnold initiated a counterattack, completed by García’s clever finish over Baunou.

This goal was somewhat against the run of play, as Al Hilal equalized shortly after from the penalty spot. Asensio’s foul highlighted the frustration that has haunted Madrid through the ongoing season.

Despite the challenges, Al Hilal proved to be constant threats, potentially positioning themselves favorably to advance from a group that includes Pachuca and Red Bull Salzburg. Meanwhile, Real Madrid plans to regroup ahead of their next matches, with hopes for Mbappé’s soon return from illness. While they remain strong contenders for the Club World Cup, significant work lies ahead.

Fan Take: This news resonates with soccer fans as it highlights the volatility of elite football, where even the most established clubs can struggle against emerging teams. The ongoing challenges faced by Real Madrid could signal a shift in the competitive landscape, making the sport even more thrilling for supporters of all teams.
