Brazil Recently, reports from Athletic indicate that manager Carlo Ancelotti is facing tax evasion charges in Spain. The former Real Madrid coach received a one-year prison sentence and a fine of 386,361 euros for failing to pay taxes on his image rights in 2014 during his first tenure with Real Madrid. However, he is unlikely to serve time in prison. Notable figures like Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi have faced similar charges in Spain.

Ancelotti avoided indictment back in 2015, as it was determined he had left Spain for London after his dismissal from Real Madrid, which affected his tax responsibilities. Given Spain’s legal practices, it’s doubtful he will actually serve prison time for such a minor offense, especially for a first-time non-violent offender.

The details of his case emerged during proceedings at the 30th Crown Court in Madrid on April 2 and 3, where it was established that he has since settled his debts. His defense argued that Real Madrid was responsible for withholding the appropriate taxes and that there was no intent to defraud.

Ancelotti rejoined Real Madrid in 2021 and assumed the Brazilian coaching role in June 2025 without being under investigation. Initially, the Spanish prosecutor sought a lengthy prison term of four years and nine months, along with fines of 3.2 million euros, but these were significantly reduced by the final ruling.

Ancelotti has achieved remarkable success during his tenure at Real Madrid, winning three Champions League titles.

Fan Take: This development underscores the ongoing issue of tax evasion in football, which affects not only the reputation of the sport but also influences how financial regulations are enforced. For soccer fans, this case serves as a reminder that even the sport’s most celebrated figures face accountability, and it potentially puts a spotlight on systemic issues in football’s financial management.
