Denver Nuggets’ Newest Star Breathes Easy: Dodging the ‘Problem’ That is Nikola Jokic

The Denver Nuggets have strengthened their lineup through free agency with notable additions. While Jonas Valanciunas’ future with the team remains uncertain, the newcomers are expected to significantly bolster the roster.

Last season, the Nuggets fell to the Oklahoma City Thunder in a decisive Game 7 of the Western Conference Semifinals. Despite Nikola Jokic delivering impressive stats with averages of 28.4 points, 13.9 rebounds, and 5.9 assists, the team lacked the depth to surpass the younger Thunder squad.

To address this, Denver brought in Tim Hardaway Jr., Bruce Brown, and Cameron Johnson, each known for their strong shooting capabilities. Johnson arrived in a trade that sent Michael Porter Jr. to the Brooklyn Nets. He proved his value with the Nets by averaging 18.8 points per game while shooting 39% from beyond the arc. Although the Nets missed the playoffs, Johnson was a key player.

Excited about teaming with Jokic, Johnson praised his teammate’s versatility, basketball IQ, and unique skills, noting Jokic is one of the greatest players statistically and one of the best in league history. Johnson first gained attention during his time with the Phoenix Suns, contributing solidly in their 2021 NBA Finals run, shooting 44.6% from three-point range in the playoffs. He continued to excel with the Suns before being traded to Brooklyn as part of a deal for Kevin Durant.

During his two and a half seasons with the Nets, Johnson was a standout player, adept on both offense and defense, making him a great fit for the Nuggets. His stats over recent seasons highlight his consistency and shooting prowess, with three-point shooting hovering around 39-40%. Besides scoring, Johnson’s defense adds strength alongside teammates Aaron Gordon and Bruce Brown.

NBA analyst Bill Simmons described the trade as a “home run” for the 2023 champions. Johnson’s performance suggests he will play a vital role on Denver’s squad, but the team still needs to ensure depth, especially with uncertainty surrounding Jokic’s contract status.

Fan Take: This acquisition signals the Nuggets’ serious intent to contend at a higher level by adding reliable shooters and defenders who complement Jokic’s unique style. For basketball fans, it means an exciting season ahead with Denver potentially becoming a deeper, more dynamic team capable of challenging for the title.
