Ronald Acuña Jr. will not take part in the Home Run Derby, and Atlanta teammate and All-Star Matt Olson will replace him on Friday. Acuña, the starting outfielder for the National League, is expected to play in the All-Star Game held at his home stadium, while Olson, an infielder, steps in for the derby.

Olson is set to become the first Atlanta player to win a Home Run Derby on Monday night and is the fourth player overall to win the event at home. The All-Star Game itself is scheduled for Tuesday night. Olson, who previously competed in the 2021 Derby but was eliminated in the first round, entered this season’s weekend with 17 home runs to his name.

Other participants confirmed for the derby include Byron Buxton from Minnesota, Junior Kaminero from Tampa Bay, Jazz Chisholm Jr. from the Yankees, Onile Cruz from Pittsburgh, Cal Laurie from Seattle, Yaz Chisholm Jr. from Washington, and Brent Rooker, the first to join from athletics since Olson.

Fan Take: This update is exciting for baseball fans because it highlights the unexpected substitution of a top slugger with a skilled teammate, which could lead to surprising moments in the Derby. Olson’s opportunity to shine on home turf adds an extra layer of excitement and represents the deep talent within the Atlanta team, promising a thrilling All-Star event.
