NFL Free Agent Nyheim Hines Eyes Comeback After Two-Year Hiatus Following Jet Ski Accident

Niheim Hines, a running back and return specialist, hasn’t played in a football game since the 2022 postseason due to recovering from a jet ski accident that caused him to miss two full seasons. The free agent, previously with the Indianapolis Colts and Buffalo Bills, tore his ACL in the accident when he was struck by others while on a jet ski. Hines is targeting a comeback in 2025.

“I’m not done yet, and my story is still up to me,” Hines told the Charlotte Observer. He acknowledged the unpredictable challenges athletes face but emphasized that performance is key to shaping their career narratives. Currently, he is in talks with the Cleveland Browns, Colts, and Houston Texans, awaiting a formal contract offer. He believes his recovery has brought him back to his pre-injury form.

Speaking on SiriusXM NFL Radio, Hines said, “I’ve reached speeds of 22.8, 23 mph last year, and my explosiveness is finally back.” He’s not aiming to be a star offensive player but is ready to contribute in any role his next team needs, whether that’s as a pass catcher, a tough runner between the tackles, or a kick/punt returner. “I just want the chance to get on the field and make plays,” he added.

After being traded to the Browns before the 2024 season, Hines didn’t play any snaps and was released in February 2025. During his time with Cleveland, he developed a friendship with running back Nick Chubb, who is also battling serious injuries. Hines reflected on their bond, saying Chubb has been a great source of inspiration during recovery.

In Hines’s last full season, he recorded 24 carries for 33 yards and one touchdown, splitting 2022 between the Colts and Bills. Over his five-year NFL career, he played 81 games, carried the ball 306 times for 1,202 yards, and scored 10 touchdowns.

Fan Take: This update on Niheim Hines is significant for NFL fans as it highlights the resilience and dedication required to overcome serious injuries and return to professional football. His versatile skill set and determination may offer valuable depth and special teams contributions to whichever team signs him, adding an intriguing comeback story to watch in the 2025 season.
