Real Madrid announced on Monday the signing of Alvaro Carreras, a left-back previously with Benfica.

The 22-year-old defender spent three years in the Madrid Academy before transferring to Manchester United in 2020.

Carreras represents the latest addition to Madrid’s defense, which already includes center-back Dean Huygen and right-back Trent Alexander Arnold. This recruitment aims to revamp the team’s backline in preparation for the upcoming Club World Cup, following a semi-final defeat to Paris Saint-Germain.

This season marked the first time since 2021 that Madrid finished without a significant trophy, having been outpaced by Barcelona in La Liga, losing in the Copa del Rey final, and being knocked out in the Champions League quarter-finals.

Carreras was highly regarded by Madrid and strengthens their left-back position, especially considering Ferland Mendy’s frequent injuries last season.

Before joining United, he played alongside fellow young Madrid player Raul Asensio during his academy years. After four years in Manchester, including loan spells at Preston North End and Granada, he moved to Benfica on an initial loan with an option for a permanent transfer.

The Spain Under-21 international had an impressive 2024-25 season, making 32 appearances in Portugal’s Primeira Liga and 10 in the Champions League.

Fan Take: This news is significant for soccer enthusiasts because it signals Real Madrid’s commitment to strengthening their squad following a trophy-less season. Carreras could play a crucial role in reshaping their defense and ultimately restoring the club’s dominance in upcoming competitions.
