Arsenal Breaks Records as They Sign Canadian Star Olivia Smith for Women’s Soccer’s Highest Transfer Fee!

Canadian forward Olivia Smith has set a new precedent in women’s football, transferring to Arsenal from Liverpool for a record-breaking fee of £1 million ($1.34 million). This deal surpasses the previous highest transfer fee of £900,000 ($1.1 million) paid for Naomi Gilma by Arsenal in January.

Smith’s four-year contract reflects the increasing investment in women’s football, a trend highlighted by the frequent breaking of transfer records. Last year, Zambian striker Rachel Kundanaj made headlines when she joined Bay FC from Madrid CFF for $788,000. Notably, in 2020, the record for the most expensive female player was held by Denmark’s Pernille Harder, who moved from Wolfsburg to Chelsea for $355,000.

Further transfers saw UK’s Keira Walsh leave Manchester City for Barcelona in 2022 for $513,000, followed by Chelsea signing Meira Ramirez from Levante for $542,000 in 2024. At just 20 years old, Smith has quickly risen through the ranks since her start in the US college system, joining a Portuguese club in 2023, where she netted 16 goals in 28 games. Moving to Liverpool last year, she contributed nine goals in 25 appearances. Smith is also noteworthy for being Canada’s youngest international player, having debuted at the age of 15 in 2019.

Arsenal’s coach, Rennie Sleggers, praised Smith as an exciting talent capable of making significant contributions to the team, citing her strong mentality and her success in two European leagues at such a young age. Arsenal, a 15-time British champion and the only English team to win the Champions League, continues to make headlines with this acquisition. Smith expressed her eagerness to compete for prestigious titles in the UK and Europe, stating her excitement about joining Arsenal.
