Barcelona is set to finalize a contract that will see Thiago Alcantara return to the club as part of manager Hansi Flick’s coaching staff in the near future, according to multiple sources speaking to ESPN.

Having developed through the team’s youth academy, Thiago initially joined Flick last summer, contributing to the team’s adaptation under the leadership of the German manager.

However, the former Spanish international’s tenure was cut short after just over a month due to administrative complications that forced him back to Liverpool.

Since his return to Barcelona, he has been anticipating an opportunity to rejoin Flick’s staff, but complications related to financial fair play at the Catalan club have hindered a permanent position.

Current reports suggest that Barca is executing several financial maneuvers to free up the necessary funds to bring Thiago back.

Thiago previously played under Flick at Bayern Munich, where he was instrumental in the team’s successes in 2020.

Now 34, he will continue his role as one of Flick’s assistants, focusing particularly on guiding younger players to meet the expectations set by the former German coach.

After rising through the ranks at La Masia, Barcelona’s youth academy, Thiago made 101 appearances for the first team before moving to Bayern Munich in 2013.

He transitioned to Liverpool in 2020, but injuries plagued his time at Anfield, leading to his retirement from professional soccer in 2024 after making 98 appearances for the club.

Fan Take: This development is significant for soccer fans as it signifies Barcelona’s commitment to blending experience with youth, potentially revitalizing the squad. Thiago’s familiarity with both the club and Flick’s philosophy could lead to a stronger team dynamic and improved on-field performance, which many fans are eager to see.
