What’s Next for Oleksandr Usyk in the Heavyweight Division if He Defeats Daniel Dubois This Saturday?

Oleksandr Usyk, the WBA, WBC, and WBO heavyweight champion, already boasts a Hall of Fame-worthy career regardless of Saturday’s rematch outcome with IBF heavyweight champion Daniel Dubois (12:30 pm, Dazn PPV). A victory over Dubois would make Usyk, a former undisputed cruiserweight champion, a two-division undisputed champion in heavyweight as well. While Dubois is a fierce competitor, it’s hard not to look at Usyk’s career and wonder what more he can accomplish. Since turning pro after winning Olympic gold in 2012, Usyk remains undefeated at 23-0, having unified all cruiserweight world titles through the World Boxing Super Series, then moving up to heavyweight where he scored two wins each over Anthony Joshua and Tyson Fury. At 38, questions linger about how much longer Usyk will compete and what challenges remain.

Usyk has publicly committed to fighting in Ukraine again before retiring. If he defeats Dubois, his path forward still appears full of notable matchups, including a potential trilogy fight with Tyson Fury. While the first two bouts favored Usyk, Fury has hinted at a comeback and a third fight with him, which could generate significant attention despite not being a necessity sporting-wise. Another potential opponent is Joseph Parker, a former WBO heavyweight champ who is currently on a six-fight winning streak, including victories over Deontay Wilder and Zhilei Zhang, though some question the quality of his most recent wins. Additionally, rising star Cabayer, undefeated at 26-0 and having impressed on major Saudi Arabia fight cards, could earn a title shot sooner, posing a serious threat to the heavyweight division and possibly being an easier fight for Usyk in Ukraine compared to Fury or Parker.

Fan Take: This rematch and potential future matchups underscore the dynamic and evolving nature of the heavyweight division, keeping fans hooked on high-stakes battles. Usyk’s journey adds a captivating narrative about skill, determination, and legacy that enriches the sport’s history and excitement.
