Anderson Silva lands a crushing elbow to the head, denying his challenger a tap and securing his UFC title defense

If Travis Rutter had met the weight requirements 19 years ago, Anderson Silva might have defended his UFC middleweight title 11 times. Silva, regarded as one of the most accomplished figures in mixed martial arts, is a former UFC middleweight champion known for his record-setting dominance in the Octagon. His 10th straight title defense came after he knocked out Rich Franklin with a knee at UFC 64, securing his hold on the 185-pound championship.

The only fighter with more consecutive title defenses in UFC history achieved that milestone because of Silva’s later victory over Travis Rutter. On February 3, 2007, at UFC 67, Silva was set to defend his middleweight belt against Rutter. However, the bout became a non-title fight as Rutter missed weight by 1.5 pounds. Rutter appeared severely dehydrated at the weigh-ins, struggling to even stand, foreshadowing a tough night ahead.

During the fight, Silva maintained control even as Rutter, a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu practitioner, seemed to momentarily gain the upper hand. But in the second round, Silva secured a triangle choke and unleashed a relentless barrage of elbows, forcing Rutter to tap out. Following this defeat, Rutter only fought three more times in the UFC, never again vying for the championship.

Silva’s victory over Rutter marked the beginning of his historic title reign, although it didn’t count as a defense due to the weight issue. Over his career, Silva successfully defended the middleweight title 10 times, the highest number in that division’s history. This streak ranks him second in UFC history for consecutive title defenses, trailing only Demetrius Johnson, and places him third across all weight classes combined. While Silva remains one of the top contenders in the conversation about MMA’s greatest of all time, a recent Bloody Elbow poll showed mixed sentiments among fans: only 4.95 percent picked Silva as the best MMA fighter ever, ranking him seventh behind Jon Jones, Georges St-Pierre, Khabib Nurmagomedov, Johnson, and Fedor Emelianenko.

Fan Take: Anderson Silva’s near-perfect run and unparalleled skill set continue to inspire fighters and fans alike, underscoring the heights of excellence possible in MMA. Remembering moments like his UFC 67 fight highlights the fine margins in combat sports that can alter history—and why such legacies matter deeply to the sport’s evolution.
