Anne Catlin Berger had an impressive final save as Germany emerged victorious over France, winning 6-5 in a penalty shootout to secure a spot in the Euro 2025 semi-finals against Spain, the reigning World Champions.

Despite facing a significant challenge after defender Kathryn Hendrich received a straight red card just 13 minutes into the match, Germany mounted a remarkable comeback, demonstrating their resilience in a thrilling shootout.

Hendrich was dismissed after a VAR decision determined she had pulled Kheira Hamraoui’s hair in the penalty area, leading Grace Jeyoro to convert the ensuing penalty kick, which Berger nearly saved.

Germany quickly evened the score when Sjoeke Nuesken took advantage of a defensive lapse, darting towards the corner and heading the ball into the net just 25 minutes into the game.

With their strong defensive strategy, Germany managed to hold off France, which had two goals disallowed for offside, and Nuesken saved a penalty in the second half. The match remained scoreless through extra time.

“For most of the match, it was hard to tell we were down to just ten players, and I’m so proud of our team’s effort,” German captain Janina Minge remarked about their brave fightback. “The support from the fans was unbelievable; I’ve never experienced anything like it, and it motivated us to push through.”

In the penalty shootout, Berger started strong by saving Amel Maziri’s shot, though Germany had to regroup after Sarah Debris struck the crossbar earlier. “This is everything we have right now,” said Berger, a cancer survivor who proudly displays a tattoo covering her treatment scar, as she leaped to deny Alice Sombus, sending Germany to the final four.

The other semi-final will see the UK face Italy on Tuesday.

“We accomplished the toughest task by going up against a team with ten players. The pressure of penalties is immense; it’s tough for young players like Alice.”

Fan Take: This victory is a testament to Germany’s resilience and strategy under pressure, resonating deeply with soccer fans who appreciate the thrill of a well-fought match. It not only highlights the excitement of the tournament but also enhances the competitive spirit in women’s soccer, paving the way for future talents and inspiring the next generation.
