China’s sixth-ranked No. 2 Zheng Qinwen undergoes arthroscopic surgery in her right elbow after experiencing “continuous pain” for several months.

The 22-year-old Olympic champion, who lost to Katerina Sirkova in the first round at Wimbledon, said that the surgery was successful on Saturday.

“We have been dealing with persistent pain in our right elbow over the past few months and during training and games. Despite various treatments we have tried to manage it, the discomfort has not completely gone away,” the right-handed player said in an Instagram post. “After consulting with an elbow specialist and having a thorough discussion with my team, I decided that arthroscopic surgery was the best option to completely resolve the problem. Yesterday I took the procedure well.

Zheng writes that he will recover in “the next few weeks and months.”

The US Open, where Zheng was a quarterfinalist for the past two years, begins on August 24th.
