Demetrious Johnson recently shared his perspective on Dustin Poirier following Poirier’s retirement after UFC 318. “Diamond” was defeated by Max Holloway via unanimous decision as Holloway successfully defended the BMF title on Saturday night. In a heartfelt farewell, Poirier fought one last time in front of his hometown crowd in New Orleans, Louisiana, officially retiring after the match.

Though Poirier never became an undisputed UFC champion and retired with 10 losses out of 40 fights, he is still widely expected to earn a place in the Hall of Fame. Johnson, regarded as one of MMA’s all-time greats, praised Poirier’s career as “very successful” despite never reaching the sport’s elite champion status. He noted that Poirier’s entertaining fighting style not only earned him substantial earnings but also set him apart in the sport.

Johnson described Poirier’s career as a long journey with many highs and lows, highlighting his ability to both knock out opponents and be submitted. Despite never holding the undisputed title, Poirier still achieved interim championship status and delivered some of the most exciting fights in the sport.

During the final fight, Holloway showed respect by stepping aside to let Poirier enjoy his moment in the spotlight. In his farewell interview with Daniel Cormier, Poirier expressed deep gratitude for the support he received throughout his career from fans, his home state, and the UFC. He admitted feeling overwhelmed by the experience and appreciated having touched so many people through his dedication and pursuit of his dreams.

Fan Take: Dustin Poirier’s retirement marks the end of an era for a fighter who epitomized heart, resilience, and entertainment in the octagon. For fight fans, Poirier’s career highlights the balance between skill, marketability, and perseverance, reminding us that success in MMA can take many forms beyond just holding championship gold.
