Dynamic Penguins Poised to Emerge as Top Breakout Stars

Rutger McGroarty, who was acquired by the Pittsburgh Penguins from the Winnipeg Jets last season, has signed an entry-level contract with the Metropolitan Division team. The 2022 first-round pick played in eight NHL games against Pittsburgh last season, recording one goal, three points, and 12 hits. Notably, all three points came during his last four appearances with the Penguins in April, ending his rookie season on a promising note.

Despite this, McGroarty spent the majority of the 2024-25 season with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins in the AHL. The 21-year-old forward showed strong potential, tallying 14 goals, 25 assists, and a total of 36 points across 60 games.

McGroarty has made an impressive start to his pro career, positioning himself as a potential breakout player for the upcoming season. Standing at 6-foot-1, the winger possesses the skills to become a legitimate top-six forward, and it’s not surprising to anticipate his offensive game to develop further at the NHL level, especially within the Penguins organization.

The Penguins’ current roster offers McGroarty a real chance to earn a spot in their top six and be part of their power play units. Even if he ends up in a top-nine role, he could provide valuable secondary scoring, which the team desperately needs.

Looking ahead to the 2025-26 season and beyond, it will be exciting to watch how McGroarty’s career unfolds. His future with the Penguins looks bright and full of potential.

The Pittsburgh Penguins have also bolstered their roster this offseason by adding players such as Anthony Mantha, Matt Dumba, Justin Brazzo, Artouz Silofs, Conor Clifton, and Parker Wotherspoon, significantly increasing the team’s depth.

Fan Take: McGroarty’s rise is an exciting development for Penguins fans eager to see fresh talent emerge and strengthen the team’s future. His growth, combined with the offseason additions, could signal a promising new era for Pittsburgh that keeps the franchise competitive and thrilling to watch.
