Matt Cook, a former forward for the Pittsburgh Penguins, has landed a new role for the 2024-25 BCHL season. Following five seasons with the Penguins and contributing to their 2009 Stanley Cup win, Cook has been named the general manager and head coach of the BCHL’s Vernon Vipers, as announced on July 18th.

Cook enjoyed a 16-season career in the NHL, playing for the Vancouver Canucks, Washington Capitals, Pittsburgh Penguins, and Minnesota Wild. Over 1,046 games, he scored 167 goals and tallied 398 points, with an additional 13 goals and 38 points in 110 playoff contests. His standout season with the Penguins was in 2011-12 when he recorded 19 goals and 38 points in 82 games.

Transitioning into coaching after retiring, Cook most recently served as the head coach of the ECHL’s Newfoundland Growler during the 2023-24 season.

Fan Take: This appointment is exciting news for hockey enthusiasts, as Matt Cook brings a wealth of NHL experience and leadership to junior hockey. His involvement with the Vernon Vipers could elevate the development of young talent and positively impact the future of the sport.
