Islam Makhachev Delivers Heartfelt Message to Former Challenger Dustin Poirier Following UFC 318 Decision

Dustin Poirier received warm messages after his final fight at UFC 318. The former UFC interim lightweight champion made his last walk in the octagon on Saturday night, competing in front of a home crowd in New Orleans, Louisiana. Despite his efforts, Poirier’s farewell bout was overshadowed by his opponent, BMF champion Max Holloway. Holloway successfully avoided defeat and claimed victory with a unanimous decision, finally avenging his previous losses to “Diamond” Poirier.

Following the fight, many fighters paid tribute to Poirier, including one of his biggest rivals, Islam Makhachev. Over his esteemed career, Poirier unfortunately went 0-3 in title fights, with notable losses including one to lightweight champion Makhachev who submitted him in the final round of their UFC 302 title bout last summer. Makhachev expressed respect and admiration for Poirier after his retirement, writing, “Congratulations, Dustin. You are truly one of the greatest people to step into a cage. It was an honor and privilege to share it with you.”

Although Poirier didn’t win his final fight, his legacy in the sport remains significant. He claimed the Interim Lightweight Championship in 2019 by ending Max Holloway’s impressive 13-fight winning streak, and he was the first fighter to knock out Conor McGregor in 2021, also winning their trilogy series with a TKO later that year. Poirier retires with a UFC record of 22-9 and an overall MMA record of 30-10. After the fight, UFC CEO Dana White hinted that Poirier might be inducted into the UFC Hall of Fame.

Fan Take: Dustin Poirier’s retirement marks the end of an era for MMA fans, signaling the departure of a fighter who brought heart, resilience, and unforgettable moments to the octagon. His impact on the lightweight division and his memorable battles with legends like McGregor and Holloway will inspire future generations and keep fans eagerly anticipating the next chapter in UFC history.
