On Saturday night in Frisco, Texas, undefeated two-division champion Jesse “Bam” Rodriguez expanded his 115-pound title collection by defeating Phumelela Cafu via a 10-round TKO in a unified junior bantamweight championship bout. Rodriguez, already holding the WBC title, claimed Cafu’s WBO belt after aggressively dominating the fight, forcing Cafu’s corner to throw in the towel just 2 minutes and 7 seconds into the 10th round.

Rodriguez landed a total of 218 punches to Cafu’s 144. “I felt that was a good performance,” Rodriguez reflected. “Probably my best to date. It was my toughest opponent and hardest fight. Cafu was much tougher than expected, but we got the job done.”

With this victory, Rodriguez (22-0) successfully defended his WBC title for the second time since his thrilling knockout over Juan Francisco Estrada in June 2024. He is now set to face Fernando Martinez for the WBA title. Cafu (11-1-3), who was fighting in the U.S. for the first time, had won the WBO belt in October 2024 by defeating Tanaka Kosei in Japan.

Fan Take: This win cements Jesse “Bam” Rodriguez as a dominant force in the junior bantamweight division, showcasing his skill and toughness. For fighting fans, it signals an exciting era of unification bouts that could reshape the sport’s landscape and elevate competition to unprecedented levels.
