Levi Onwuzurike Faces Season-Ending Surgery, Delivering Another Tough Setback for the Lions

Detroit Lions defensive lineman Levion Onwuzurike will miss the entire season following knee surgery, a setback for the team as he was expected to take on a bigger role after Alim McNeill’s injury. Coach Dan Campbell announced this on Sunday morning before the team’s initial NFL training camp session this year.

The 27-year-old Onwuzurike had a career-high 11 games last season and saw increased playing time when McNeill suffered a season-ending knee injury in December. McNeill, who signed a lucrative four-year, $97 million contract last October, remains out indefinitely.

With Onwuzurike sidelined, rookie defensive tackle Tyleik Williams is poised to step up and play a critical part as the Lions, two-time NFC North defensive champions, prepare for their season opener against the Green Bay Packers on September 7th. Detroit selected Williams, a standout from Ohio State, with the 28th overall pick in the draft. The 6-foot-3, 334-pound rookie started 13 games with the National Champion Buckeyes, recording 46 tackles, including eight for loss, and 2.5 sacks.

Additionally, the Lions will rely on veteran defensive tackle DJ Reader, who is 31 years old, along with recently acquired Loilopes. The latter started 16 games for Arizona last season and began his career with the Cardinals and Houston Texans, appearing in 50 games.
