NHL.com has shared the top highlight reels of the season’s best young talents, featuring two players from the Montreal Canadiens. Notably, defenseman Lane Hutson, who earned the Calder Trophy, is showcased alongside Ivan Demidov, who joined the team later in the season.
Hutson experienced one of Montreal’s most heartfelt rookie campaigns, as the team’s goaltender, Kendryden, secured 39 wins with eight shutouts. The previous season, Kendryden also played a key role in leading the Canadiens to a Stanley Cup victory and was honored with the Conn Smythe Trophy as the playoff MVP.
Among the Canadiens, Kaiden Gar stands out as a promising prospect with high potential, while the team appears to be finding new solutions to their challenge of filling the second-line center position. Interestingly, Gar is also seen as a strong candidate for a comeback season.
Although I wasn’t around during Dryden’s dominance in the ’70s, when he won six Stanley Cups with the Canadiens, I witnessed Hutson’s impressive performances at the Bell Centre this season. Just as fans started to get used to his exceptional moves, Demidov’s arrival late in the season brought fresh excitement and stole the spotlight.
On the night Demidov made his debut against the Chicago Blackhawks, the press gallery was packed with media. When he scored his first career goal late in the first period, the crowd—including the press—erupted in celebration.
Typically, press members maintain neutrality, but there was no hiding their admiration when Demidov scored. His success even reminded me of Lucien “Lulu” Bouchard and sparked celebration among the Reims et comp—showing their age with a nostalgic nod. Even Connor Bedard was caught watching the big screen to witness history being made.
Featuring both Demidov and Hutson in this highlight reel reinforces the bright future within the Montreal Canadiens organization. Stay tuned for what’s next.
