Indiana Fever’s Sophie Cunningham Fined After WNBA Refs Caught Laughing on TikTok

Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham was fined $500 by the WNBA for a TikTok video, according to a source familiar with the league’s fine enforcement, as reported by The Athletic. In the video, Cunningham lip-synced a line from Sabrina Carpenter’s song “Munchild” saying, “Silly, is it slow? Maybe it’s useless,” tagging “@refs.” The video, posted on Friday, has since garnered over 1.2 million views. Cunningham addressed the fine on Wednesday via X, questioning why the video led to a penalty.

This is not the first time WNBA disciplinary action has been taken over comments about officiating. Earlier this season, Fever coach Stephanie White was fined after criticizing the league’s consistency following a loss to the Washington Mystics. In May, White openly questioned whether the WNBA should protect players from overly physical play, emphasizing the need for consistent officiating across the game.

Cunningham also faced fines earlier this year related to an incident classified as a Flagrant 2 foul during a mid-June game between the Fever and Connecticut Sun, including penalties for her involvement in the subsequent altercation. Throughout the season, many WNBA players and coaches have voiced concerns over what they perceive as inconsistent league standards.

Fines in the WNBA are rarely publicly disclosed, sparking complaints about transparency and consistency. For example, in early June, New York Liberty’s Natasha Cloud and Isabel Harrison received warnings for wearing hats on the bench during a victory over the Las Vegas Aces, despite not playing due to injuries. Like Cunningham’s fine, these warnings created frustration with the league’s enforcement.

Cloud expressed dissatisfaction with these fines, saying, “It feels like we’re doing nitpicky stuff. I’d rather focus on the real issues than lose money for expressing ourselves.” The tension between players, coaches, and the league over disciplinary standards has grown, highlighting ongoing challenges ahead.

Fan Take: This news is significant for WNBA fans because it sheds light on tensions between the league and its players regarding transparency and fairness in disciplinary actions. How the league handles such issues could impact player morale and fan perception, influencing the growth and integrity of the sport.
