Buccaneers Place Desmond Watson on Non-Football Injury List

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have placed rookie defensive tackle Dismond Watson on the non-football injury list as he works on improving his physical condition. Watson, who went undrafted out of Florida, made headlines in March when he weighed in at 464 pounds during the Gators’ Pro Day, making him one of the heaviest players ever to take part in the NFL. Since then, Watson has slimmed down to 449 pounds and is listed by the team as dealing with a “non-football illness,” though he remains an active part of the roster.

Buccaneers head coach Todd Bowles expressed satisfaction with Watson’s progress, emphasizing their goal of helping him become a healthier player. While Bowles didn’t specify weight loss targets or a timeline for Watson’s return, he acknowledged that the team has plans for him and will continue to monitor his development closely.

Watson also impressed at his Pro Day with 36 reps of 225 pounds on the bench press. Despite not being picked in the 2025 NFL Draft, he was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Buccaneers.

Fan Take: This story matters to NFL fans because it highlights the challenge and commitment required for players to meet the physical demands of professional football. Watson’s journey could inspire conversations about player health, conditioning, and the evolving standards within the sport.
