  • Digne holds contract discussions with Aston Villa
  • Will Aston Villa make Degne’s obvious desires go back and forth into new deals?

One of the current Aston Villa players appears to be determined to extend their stay at the club.

There has been some speculation in recent weeks about Lucas Digne’s future, with Villa Park hierarchies reporting last month that they are ready to accept bids of between £5 million and £10 million on the French left-back.

He turned 32 last weekend, making it the final 12 months of his current contract, but the former Everton and the Barcelona man still don’t seem ready to spend time on spells in the Midlands.

“Athletics Jacob Tancewell said Dignet is about to extend his time with Aston Villa and will be holding a contract meeting soon.”

The Frenchman, who was a consistent starter throughout Unai Emery’s reign, came to the club in January 2022 and was preferred over fairly young Ian Mattesen in the starting XI last season.

But as pointed out in the Birmingham Mail, the 32-year-old is one of the limits of people currently belonging to the Villian wage bill. Capologies quotes his current weekly salary at £120,000.

Will Aston Villa make Degne’s obvious desires go back and forth into new deals?

Digne appears to have made his stance very clear, but it remains to be seen whether the desire to renew a contract will be reciprocated by the Aston Villa hierarchy.

Some may question the wisdom of committing substantial resources to a player who turns 33 next summer.

Others may feel that the Frenchman’s obvious desire to continue at Villa Park should be rewarded with a new deal, especially given his importance to the team under Emery.

Certainly, Digne had already made a considerable impression before the arrival of the Spaniards. Predecessor Steven Gerrard lyrically waxed the “great” performance of Aston Villa’s left-back.

When it comes to determining whether a new contract will be offered, the ball appears to have been placed on the court of NSWE as the club and players approach a critical intersection.
