Jesse Chavez, MLB’s Most Traded Player, Announces Retirement Following Braves’ Latest Move

Pitcher Jesse Chavez has officially retired after an 18-season career in Major League Baseball. The right-handed reliever, who was recently designated for assignment by the Atlanta Braves—his third such move this season—opted for free agency after clearing waivers and then chose to end his playing days.

Turning 42 on August 21, Chavez played for nine different MLB teams throughout his career, including three separate stints with the Braves, where he spent the past four years. Over 1,142 innings in 657 games, he posted a 4.67 ERA and averaged 8.2 strikeouts per nine innings.

In his final appearances against Atlanta this season, Chavez recorded a 9.00 ERA over four games, giving up eight runs on 14 hits (including four home runs) and five walks in eight innings.

Chavez is notably known as the most traded player in MLB history, having been involved in transactions ten times. His career movements are so extensive that his transaction history reads like a novel. His last trade occurred in 2022 when he was part of a deal where the Los Angeles Angels sent Raysel Iglesias to another team.

He announced his retirement on Thursday during an interview on “Foul Territory,” revealing that he hasn’t played baseball since his last outing against the St. Louis Cardinals on July 13, in which he allowed four runs and six hits over two innings.

“For now, I don’t think I’m going to continue,” said Chavez. “It’s time to turn the page and start the next chapter in life, focusing on helping all young children.”

Originally drafted by the Chicago Cubs in the 39th round in 2001, Chavez opted to play college ball instead. He was later selected by the Texas Rangers in the 42nd round in 2002 and traded to the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2006. He made his MLB debut two years later.

The teams Jesse Chavez played for and the seasons he appeared include:
– Pittsburgh Pirates (2008-09)
– Atlanta Braves (2010, 2021, 2022-25)
– Kansas City Royals (2010-11)
– Toronto Blue Jays (2012)
– Oakland Athletics (2012-15)
– Los Angeles (2016)
– Los Angeles Angels (2017, 2022)
– Chicago Cubs (2018, 2022)
– Texas Rangers (2018-2020)

Fan Take: Jesse Chavez’s retirement marks the end of an era for one of MLB’s most versatile and enduring relievers. His journeyman career showcases the resilience and adaptability needed to sustain a long tenure in professional baseball, inspiring both fans and young players alike.
