On Saturday in Saratoga, the champions of the Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes showcased their dominance by overcoming setbacks in the final turn to claim victory in a $500,000 gym dandy race. Riding Sovereignty, jockey Junior Alvarado completed the nine-furlong race in 1:49.52, winning as the 1-2 favorite and earning a $3 payout against four competitors, marking the smallest field of Sovereignty’s career.
Hall of Fame trainer Bill Mott announced plans to enter Sovereignty in the $1.25 million Travers Stakes, set to take place in upstate New York on August 23. The race had tense moments approaching the turn with Sovereignty losing ground to Baeza, Closer Sandman, and Hill Road, but Alvarado remained confident throughout, saying, “Everyone else was moving, and then I was just like, ‘It’s okay, let’s start picking it up.’ I was 100% confident. I knew what I had underneath.”
Baeza, who also placed third in both the Derby and Belmont, finished second, followed by Hill Road in third place, Mo Plex in fourth, and Sandman in fifth.
