Hungary World Super Pole Race: Top Racer Raz Gatrioguru Calls It “Extraordinarily Special”

Toprak Razgatlioglu’s win at the World SBK Super Pole Race at Balaton Park was a truly special moment, especially considering it was an uncommon 10-lap race on a Sunday morning. This event held extra significance as it was the 1,000th World Superbike race since the series started in 1988.

Razgatlioglu’s triumph was made even more unique as he had previously won both the 800th and 900th World SBK races, marking him as a standout competitor in the sport’s history. “This is an incredibly special day for me,” Razgatlioglu said in a post-race TV interview. “Normally, I’m not overly excited after the Super Pole Race, but this time it feels very special, and I’m really happy. We worked hard to win once again. Now I’m watching Race 2 with hopes of a hat trick—I believe I can achieve it this afternoon.”

Sam Lowes led for several laps after Razgatlioglu made a mistake at the first turn but eventually fell behind. After overtaking Lowes, Razgatlioglu opted to maintain a solid pace rather than push aggressively for the lead again. Lowes commented, “It was tough. We switched to slicks early on, and although the track felt dry, it was challenging to gain speed after the first lap. After yesterday’s crash, I was cautious not to push too hard. When Toprak passed me, he was faster, and I managed to hold on for second place. I expected a wet race, so it’s great to have this result in dry conditions, and I’m excited to see how we perform in different situations.”

Alvaro Bautista also had a notable race, finishing ahead of Nicolo Bulega for the first time this season. Bautista’s tire choice played a crucial role—while Bulega opted for intermediate tires, Bautista went fully slick. “The conditions were tricky since the track wasn’t ideal for either wet or slick tires,” Bautista explained. “I avoided the intermediate tire since I’ve never used it before, so it was either full wet or dry. We chose dry, and it proved to be the right decision. The short race meant everyone was pushing hard, and I took some risks early on. Finishing on the podium in the 1,000th superbike race is a great feeling.”

Fan Take: Razgatlioglu’s historic victories highlight his incredible talent and solidify his legacy in World Superbike racing. This milestone event and the fierce competition showcase the sport’s exciting evolution and promise thrilling battles for fans in the seasons ahead.
