Only 78 Days Left Until Opening Night at the National Arena: Spotlight on Damon Severson

For 78 days leading up to the National Arena’s opening night, all eyes are on Damon Severson. One of the biggest offseason topics has been Severson, the right-shot defenseman who was traded from New Jersey to Columbus during the 2023 NHL Draft on June 9, 2023.

Prior to joining Columbus, Severson spent nine seasons with the New Jersey Devils, who drafted him 60th overall in the 2012 NHL Draft. After the 2023 season, the Devils parted ways with Severson due to salary cap constraints, despite his role in the team’s rebuilding efforts. Essentially, the team had to move on from him as they couldn’t afford to keep him.

Severson’s first year in Columbus was decent, though he missed some games due to injuries. He appeared in 67 games, scoring nine goals and tallying 28 points along with 51 penalty minutes. However, during his second season, his relationship with coach Dean Evason appeared to falter. Towards the end of the season, Severson was often sidelined as rookie Denton Matichuk impressed on a mostly healthy defensive lineup.

In total, Severson scored six goals and 25 points during his second season. His last game was on April 1 against Nashville, missing the final nine games as a healthy scratch. His last goal came on December 6, 2024, with his final assist recorded on March 21.

Columbus’s GM Don Waddell seems committed to keeping Severson and improving his game, as his trade options are limited. Severson’s contract value has deterred trade interest, and he is not seen as a trade candidate at this time, with reasons why detailed further in the source.

With the NHL buyout window opening soon, there is speculation about whether Columbus might use it on Severson. The team recently re-signed Ivan Provorov and Dante Fabbro, putting further pressure on Severson, alongside other right-shot defensemen Eric Gudbranson and Denton Matichuk. Provorov, though primarily a left-shot, can also play on the right.

Coach Evason highlighted that many players do not have the versatility to play on both sides of the defense. The Blue Jackets must find a way to get Severson to perform at his best this season. While other players could step in if he struggles, the team benefits most when Severson plays to his full potential.

Scouting report on Damon Severson reveals him as a two-way defender with a right shot, known for offensive contributions and solid skating but marked by occasional defensive lapses. He is reliable in his zone, utilizing positioning and active stick work effectively, including on power plays. While not a physical force, he can engage in subtle physicality.

Strengths:
– Offensive potential with strong shot and passing ability, valuable for power plays and transitions.
– Effective two-way play with good positioning and stick use and strong passing during transitions.
– Strong skating with quick acceleration and agility, capable of carrying the puck out of the zone.
– Hockey sense and calmness on the puck.
– Experience playing in all situations against top forwards.

Weaknesses:
– Occasional inconsistency in defensive zone coverage, leading to giveaways.
– Inconsistent offensive production.
– Limited physicality, not known for big hits.

Overall, Severson is a dependable defender who contributes on both ends of the ice. Despite some flaws, he offers a well-balanced game and is a valuable player who can be counted on in various situations, though he may not stand out with exceptional offensive statistics.
