Golden State Warriors icon Steph Curry has consistently delivered unforgettable, clutch shots throughout his remarkable basketball journey.

However, when reflecting on his career, one particular shot stands out above all the rest.

“In my eyes, it’s the shot against Gonzaga when I was at Davidson,” Curry shared in a recent interview with Complex’s Speedy Mormon. “Everyone experiences moments where life could take a different direction depending on the outcome. We truly believe this shot was a game-changer, not just for us, but because it happened in the first round.”

Curry described how his teammate grabbed a rebound, quickly stole it with one hand, passed it to him, and he nailed the shot, giving them a three-point lead. This moment sparked what would become a magical tournament run and boosted his confidence and rising star power.

The game occurred on March 21, 2008, when Curry scored 40 points, leading the 10th-seeded Davidson Wildcats to a victory over the 7th-seeded Gonzaga Bulldogs in the NCAA Tournament’s first round.

He made 14 of 22 field goals (63.6%) and 8 of 10 three-pointers (80%), also contributing three rebounds, two assists, and five steals in 39 minutes. His clutch three-pointer with just one minute remaining gave Davidson a 77-74 lead, forcing Gonzaga to call a timeout. The Bulldogs couldn’t recover and ultimately lost, 82-76.

Davidson then shocked the basketball world by defeating second-seed Georgetown in the second round and third-seed Wisconsin in the Sweet 16 before their impressive run ended against top-seeded Kansas in the Elite Eight.

Curry reflected, “I think about that a lot. My faith is a huge part of who I am. There’s no clear explanation—things happen, and you remain grateful, always searching for the meaning behind it.”

This moment exemplifies the butterfly effect, and Curry, along with the Warriors’ fans, clearly appreciate how everything has unfolded.

Fan Take: This story reminds basketball fans that sometimes a single shot can alter the trajectory of an entire career and a team’s legacy. Curry’s journey from a tournament underdog to an NBA superstar inspires players and fans alike, showcasing the sport’s power to create unforgettable moments and legends.
