TORONTO – Germany’s top seed Alexander Zverev led Francisco Cerundo 6-4, 1-0, with 14th seeded Argentina retired from abdominal injury at the National Bank Open on Saturday night.

Zverev moved forward to face Australian defending champion Alexei Popilin in the quarter-finals. Popilin, seeded at 18th, beat the fifth seed Holgar Rune, Denmark 4-6, 6-2, 6-3, in the first night match.

2017 champion Zverev ranked third in the world and earned top seeded with 2023 winner Jannik Sinner and top-ranked Jannik Sinner and second-placed Carlos Alcaraz, skipping the hard court event that will end Thursday. No. 5 Jack Draper and No. 6 Novak Jjokovic also sat there.

Zverev won his 24th tour title in April at Clay in Munich.

Alex Michaelsen arrived in the quarterfinals in the afternoon, topped with American learner Tien 6-3, 6-3. Michaelsen will face Russia’s 11th seed Karen Khachanov.
