Kyle Stowers powered a three-run home run as the Miami Marlins achieved a historic milestone by sweeping the New York Yankees for the first time ever with a 7-3 win on Sunday. The Marlins, now at a balanced 55-55 record, secured victories in all three matchups against the Yankees, who stand at 60-52.

In his season opener, Yankees starter Luis Gil struggled, lasting only 3 1/3 innings and giving up multiple runs and walks, while Marlins’ Edward Cabrera delivered a strong performance over six innings with just two hits allowed and seven strikeouts. Cabrera’s only hit against came from Trent Grisham, who sent a fastball to right-center field. Miami rookie Jacob Marcy, who debuted Friday, went 4-for-2, nearly completing the cycle.

Jazz Chisholm Jr. hit a two-run homer in the seventh inning to bring New York closer, but the Marlins quickly responded with an RBI triple, restoring their four-run lead. Additional contributions came from Xavier Edwards with two hits including an RBI single, and Troy Johnston with a run-scoring double. Remarkably, Miami holds a 24-24 record against the Yankees across regular and postseason play, making them the only team against which the Yankees have no winning record.

Reported by Associated Press.

Fan Take: This sweep marks a significant moment for the Marlins franchise and signals that they can compete with baseball’s elite teams. For fans, it adds excitement and unpredictability to the sport, showcasing that even historic powerhouses like the Yankees aren’t unbeatable.
