  • Manchester United must find a replacement for Casemiro
  • Red Devils are looking to sign a new midfielder

Football pundit Paul Merson has claimed he is not completely convinced by midfielder Elliott Anderson, who is being chased by Manchester United.

The Red Devils will be looking to strengthen their midfield in the summer transfer window.

United needed a midfielder in any form, and that priority became even more important when Casemiro announced he would be leaving the club at the end of the season.

The Brazilian midfielder has been in great form for the Red Devils this season.

Under new manager Michael Carrick, Casemiro has found his form again and his contributions in the last three games have been important.

Manchester United must find a replacement for Casemiro

The midfielder scored a goal and provided an assist in the 3–2 win against Fulham. United are happy with him but are aware he will leave and are currently working behind the scenes to select a replacement.

Nottingham Forest midfielder Anderson has been heavily linked with a move to United, with Manchester City also expected to be in the race for his signature.

However, Melson has doubts about Anderson and his ability to control the midfield.

As reported by United in Focus, he told Sky Sports News:

“I don’t know, I like Elliott Anderson, but he doesn’t surprise me.

“I like Elliott Anderson, but Forest are fourth from the bottom of the league and fifth from the bottom of the league, so they don’t dominate the entire midfield.

“And if you’re a midfield player, that’s where the engine comes from. You know what I’m saying? I’ve never seen him run the show in midfield at Nottingham Forest. We’re talking about Man United.”

“I’d take Wharton before him.”

Man United are expected to search far and wide on the market for a new midfielder, but it remains to be seen what that will look like.

The Red Devils have been linked with signings for Anderson, Adam Wharton, Carlos Bareva and other midfielders.

Given the lack of depth in this position, it is possible that even two midfielders could join the club.

Anderson and Wharton are both England internationals and competition to sign him in the summer will be fierce.

City rate the Forest midfielder highly, while Liverpool have their eye on Crystal Palace midfielder Wharton.
