MONTREAL — Elena Rivakina has made it to the National Bank’s Open Semi-finals after Rivakina led 6-1, 2-1 after Marta Kostuk was forced to retire on Monday with an obvious arm injury.
Kazakhstan’s No. 9 seed Rivakina has converted three of his 10 breakpoint chances in the quarterfinals at IGA Stadium. The players shook hands at the 54-minute mark before leaving the courthouse, seeded in the 24th century shed tears.
After the third match, the Ukrainian trainer wrapped his forearms in medical tape.
Rivakina faces the winner of a Monday night matchup between Canadian teenage sensory Victoria Mboco and Spain’s Jessica Bouza Maneiro.
Mboko upset top-seeded Kokogoff in a straight set on Saturday, winning a biased match in just 62 minutes.
The 18-year-old from Toronto has surged from outside the top 300 in the WTA rankings in the breakthrough year to 85th place.
The tournament final is Thursday. The top five seeds of the event were eliminated before the quarterfinals.
