The Knicks have reportedly secured their top defensive coach, Brendan O’Connor, but the search for a coach to lead the offense has taken a turn. According to sources, Mike Weiner, previously considered for the Knicks’ top assistant role focused on offense, has removed himself from contention. Instead, Weiner has chosen to continue coaching alongside Rick Carlisle, head coach of the Indiana Pacers, an Eastern Conference contender.

This update was initially shared by Stephen Bondy of the New York Post. Weiner, 41, has worked as an assistant under Carlisle for seven seasons from 2018 to 2025 with both the Dallas Mavericks and Pacers. Although Weiner is under contract with the Pacers, he would likely be allowed to leave if offered a promotion or a raise.

The remaining candidate for the offensive coaching position is Chris Jent, who is currently signing with the Charlotte Hornets. As Ian Begley notes, Jent has previously worked on Brown’s coaching staff with the Cleveland Cavaliers and has held assistant coaching roles with several teams including the 76ers, Magic, Cavaliers, Kings, Hawks, Lakers, and Hornets between 2003 and 2025. His record includes a 5-13 season in 2004-05. Siriusxm’s Frank Isola recently identified Jent as the leading candidate.

Head coach Brown retains several key assistants such as Tom Thibodeau, Darren Elman, Mark Bryant, Maurice Cheeks, Rick Brunson, and Jordan Brink.

Fan Take: This coaching news is significant for basketball fans as it highlights the Knicks’ commitment to strengthening their coaching staff on both defense and offense, which could lead to improved team performance. If the Knicks finalize a strong offensive coach, it could mark a turning point for their competitiveness in the league and bring fresh energy to their playing style.
