The flyer may not be savvy with spending— and that’s perfectly okay… at least for now

Recent analysis indicates that the Philadelphia Flyers haven’t managed their finances optimally in recent years, though this hasn’t yet become a significant problem. At the start of free agency last month, the Flyers signed goalie Dan Vladar, who is expected to have the greatest impact among all new players in the 2025-26 season.

While Vladar’s contract received a moderate grade, similar to contracts for Ivan Fedotov and Trevor Zegras, these evaluations might not fully capture the situation. Unlike Fedotov, Vladar has proven himself as a reliable NHL backup goalie, and he comes with a very low cap hit of just $75K. The Flyers hope his addition will help them secure more wins.

Regarding Dvorak, he signed a one-year deal with the potential to be traded by the NHL deadline if the right offer comes along. Zegras was acquired with the hope he can regain his previous scoring form and sustain his offensive production, as he was one of the NHL’s most promising talents just two seasons ago. Although some analysts are critical of his contract, like Vladar’s, the negative assessments may be overstated.

Players like Juulsen and Gilbert were not included in the evaluation; Juulsen’s recovery from a hernia injury remains uncertain, and Gilbert is unlikely to make the NHL roster soon.

Looking ahead to the 2025-26 season, the Flyers hold the third-highest dead cap space in the NHL, a challenging position. The good news is that GM Danny Briere has secured favorable deals for key prospects such as Tyson Forster, Bobby Brink, Nick Sheeler, Egor Zamra, Cam Yorke, Sam Erson, and Noah Cates, who all earned solid grades. Additionally, the Flyers haven’t been weighted down by entry-level contract exclusions like Matvei Michkov.

Overall, while some contracts might be a bit overvalued, the Flyers have not obstructed players like Dvorak and Vladar from contributing meaningfully in the future, and their presence adds value to the roster. The real test will come in the next couple of offseasons; this period serves as just an introduction.

Fan Take: This news is crucial for hockey fans because it signals the Flyers’ cautious but hopeful path toward rebuilding their competitive edge. How management navigates player development and contract decisions in the next few years could significantly influence the team’s success and fan engagement.
