The Hawks Targeted Building a Young Core Around Tray, But Expansion of Their Star Roster Remains on Hold

Many sports fans worldwide have shared their opinions on the ongoing contract dispute between the Dallas Cowboys and star pass rusher Micah Parsons. However, one voice stands out amid the chatter—Atlanta Hawks’ starting point guard Trae Young.

Young’s social media posts showed clear support for his fellow athletes, without any hidden messages. His statement of solidarity came about three and a half weeks after he became eligible for a contract extension himself, which he has yet to receive.

The extension could potentially be worth four years and $229 million, a deal comparable to what De’Aaron Fox secured in San Antonio. Yet, a month past his eligibility, Young remains without a new contract extension, causing visible frustration. ESPN’s Mark J. Spears highlighted Young’s dedication to the Hawks during an “NBA Today” segment, noting Young’s efforts to help recruit players and his active role in the team’s operations.

Young is an explosive scorer and playmaker, a four-time All-Star, and a past All-NBA selection. He led the league in assists last season, averaging double-digit assists in each of the last three campaigns. Despite his individual brilliance and leading the Hawks to the Eastern Conference Finals in 2021, questions arise about whether the Hawks’ investment in his peak years justifies taking up about 30% of their salary cap.

Since that deep playoff run, the Hawks have struggled with consistency, despite changes in coaches, teammates, and front office leadership. They have posted a losing record over the last four seasons, with limited playoff success and consistently poor defense, even as Young ranks among the top offensive players in the league.

This past season felt different, as the Hawks improved defensively, largely due to the strides of Dyson Daniels, the NBA’s most improved player. The Hawks made it to the 2024 NBA Cup semifinals and held a competitive position in the East until a key injury to forward Jalen Johnson derailed their momentum.

Though their record was under .500 and they exited early in the playoffs again, the squad’s underlying health improved. Heading into the summer, the Hawks look promising with a core of young, talented players surrounding Young, plus an unprotected 2026 first-round pick from either the Pelicans or Hornets.

The Hawks now have more size, shooting, and defensive skill around Young, creating an ideal environment for a smaller point guard who excels at manipulating defenses and setting up teammates. Last season, the Hawks led the NBA in shot quality but struggled with shooting efficiency, highlighting room for growth as they aim for a better playoff seed.

What’s missing remains a long-term commitment to Young, despite his current contract running through two more seasons with a hefty salary and a sizable player option in 2026-27. The Hawks’ new GM, Onsi Saleh, might be cautious, wanting to see how the revamped roster performs before negotiating an extension.

But with Young eligible to opt out and become an unrestricted free agent next summer, the Hawks risk losing their star if they wait too long, making this a delicate situation. Possible compromises might include a shorter, lucrative deal with options to re-enter free agency later, though such deals might not satisfy either side fully.

If Young enters the new season without a deal, his morale and the team’s chemistry could suffer, creating uncertainty for a Hawks squad that otherwise has plenty to be excited about.

Fan Take: This contract saga underscores the tension star players face between loyalty and maximizing their value, a dynamic shaping the future of NBA team-building. For basketball fans, the resolution will impact the Hawks’ trajectory and highlight how teams balance talent retention with salary cap realities in a highly competitive league.
