Maverick Viñales reflected on his ongoing challenge to secure a permanent front-runner position in MotoGP by recalling his past victories over legends like Valentino Rossi, Jorge Lorenzo, and Dani Pedrosa. Early in his MotoGP career, Viñales was heralded as a future world champion and made a strong impression when he joined Yamaha in 2017, winning the opening races in Qatar and Argentina.

During the latter stages of Rossi’s career, Viñales managed to outperform the seven-time premier class champion three times over four full seasons as his Yamaha teammate. He also achieved a personal best by finishing third in the world championship standings in both 2017 and 2019, with only Honda’s Marc Márquez and Ducati’s Andrea Dovizioso ranking ahead of him those years.

However, before he could convert his early promise into a championship title, Viñales’ tenure at Yamaha abruptly ended midway through the 2021 season. His move to Aprilia later that year allowed him to rebuild his reputation, culminating in his return to victory early last season after a three-year winless stretch.

Viñales has adapted quickly to riding the KTM RC16 for Tech3 but admits that he often relies on memories of his past successes to stay motivated while competing in the midfield. The 30-year-old told Gpone, “Sometimes I remind myself that I’ve beaten Rossi, Jorge Lorenzo, and Dani Pedrosa. Maverick, you’ve really gone up against big sharks, and now it’s your moment!”

He added, “I won’t say there haven’t been tough times—every phase of my career has had its ups and downs. It’s been a while since I consistently competed at the very top, but I’ve done it before, and various factors like the bike and competitors play a role. I remind myself who I’ve battled in the past, to keep motivated and to keep believing in what I’m doing.”

Fan Take: This story resonates deeply with racing fans because it highlights the resilience and perseverance required to compete at the highest level in MotoGP. Viñales’ journey reminds us that even the most talented riders face setbacks, but their passion and determination can fuel comebacks that keep the sport thrilling and unpredictable.
