OXNARD, Calif. – Veteran offensive lineman Rael Collins shared a heartfelt moment with Dak Prescott’s daughter, MJ, last week before rejoining the Dallas Cowboys. "I’m going to protect your dad," Collins promised. "No one’s going to get to him."

Collins is back with the Cowboys for the third time, and it’s expected he’ll secure a place on the final roster. From 2015 to 2021, he was a key figure on Dallas’ offensive line. After a brief 2023 stint on the practice squad, the Cowboys called on him again this year following an injury to the line.

"MJ doesn’t have to worry—her dad will be safe," Collins expressed. "She’s my baby niece. Now I have two nieces, and I’m excited to be their favorite uncle. I’m eager to get in front of Dak again, protect him, and keep defenders away."

Over his Dallas career, Collins started 71 of 74 games. He spent 2022 with the Cincinnati Bengals but tore his ACL and MCL in his left knee after starting 15 games. Since then, he hasn’t played a regular-season game and trained with the Buffalo Bills last year.

At 32, Collins admitted there were times he wondered if the NFL was done for him, despite his desire to continue playing. "With injuries like mine late in 2022, many don’t get the chance to come back," he said. "But I had faith and trusted the process, continuing to prepare for the opportunity."

His goal was to return to where it all began—with Dallas. He’s now back weighing 300 pounds, his heaviest since high school, with healthy knees. Primarily a right tackle, Collins can also shift inside as needed. He currently wears No. 72 but hopes to reclaim No. 71, formerly worn by Nate Thomas.

Recently, Collins attended the retirement ceremony for former Cowboys offensive linemen Zach Martin and Tyron Smith. "I told them, ‘I’m still here, not finished yet, so don’t count me out,’" he said. "It’s surreal seeing your teammates move on, but I’m focused on my path and hope we cross again."

Call a Family Friend

Before training camp, Kier Ellam reached out to family friend and former Cowboys coach Bill Parcells for guidance. Parcells coached Dallas from 2003 to 2006 and helped launch Ellam’s father Abram’s seven-year NFL career.

Drafted by the Buffalo Bills in 2022 and traded to Dallas this past March, Ellam values Parcells’ mentorship. "His success and experience aren’t common," Ellam said. "I’m grateful and continuously learning from him."

Parcells has been a steady mentor, offering advice on the NFL process and ways for Ellam to grow. "He’s the guy who can pick up the phone and make calls if needed," Ellam shared.

Non-Social Media

Cowboys coach Brian Schottenheimer admits he’s not big on social media, even joking about his unfamiliarity with apps like Instagram. "My 20-something kids try to show me stuff," he said. "Sometimes I look, sometimes I don’t. I just move on."

Fan Take: Rael Collins’ return symbolizes resilience and experience strengthening the Cowboys’ offensive line, crucial for protecting their star quarterback. Coaching veterans like Bill Parcells continuing to influence young players highlight the depth of mentorship shaping the future of the NFL.
